Family Pizza Night…for under $5

mmmm

Making a weekly pizza night at home can be fun for the whole family. But STOP, I don’t mean pizza delivery, make it yourself and save money. Create a playful environment while prepping a fast and easy evening of fun, in less than 30 minutes! Let the kids help! Be creative with your toppings, use leftover meats, cheeses or veggies. Here is our favorite EASY dough and sauce recipe along with some creative combinations.

The Dough:
(Makes one 12″ thin crust pizza)
½ Cup Warm Water
1 1/8 tsp. Yeast
1 ½ tsp. Sugar
½ tsp. Salt
1 ½ tsp. Oil
1 ¼ Cups Flour

The Sauce:
8 oz Can Tomato Sauce
¼ tsp. Oregano
¼ tsp. Basil
¼ tsp. Pepper
1/8 tsp. Garlic Powder
1/8 tsp. Onion Powder
½ tsp. Parmesan Cheese

Mix, Knead then Roll the dough out on a pizza stone as thin as you like. Mix all ingredients of the sauce together and spread over dough, then your toppings, finally lots of cheese. Bake for 15 minutes @ 450 degrees. Rub a little butter over the dough after it’s rolled out for a little more flavor (before the sauce)!

  1. My Mom had a ready made pizza crust at her house and she spread Spinach Dip on it and topped w/ veggies and said it was AMAZING. I think it’s cool when you clean out the fridge and end up w/ and awesome dinner.

  2. We do pizza night with our kids several times a month. We found out that our grocery store bakery makes pizza dough and sells in individual bags for $1, so I buy in bulk and freeze. But, I can’t wait to try the pizza dough recipe!! Thanks for the creative fixin’s too!!

  3. Thanks Matt and Jena for the awesome dough recipe! We made the Toastin’ Tostada last night and it was WONDERFUL! Perfect size for three people. I couldn’t believe how easy it was to make the dough, and with everything in your cabinets already, maybe cost $0.25 to make. Sometimes I like thick pizza so I might double the recipe to get a 12-14″ thick crust.

  4. A question on the Greek pizza….do you think you could use hummus as a base? I love garlic humus and try to use it on everything. Thoughts?

  5. Yes, you can use hummus as a base. Very tasty grilled. Add some kalamata olives and I drizzle with balsamic.

My favorite toppings are artichoke hearts, capers, banana peppers, crumbled bacon, a little feta and mozz cheese and then topped with some fresh oregano. I use red sauce very sparingly on this one.

Dry whole wheat flour - better for you and it makes great crust. Wegmans sells the pizza dough both regular and whole wheat.

Fun for the kids - cut out individual size pizzas (think cereal bowl size) and let the kids put their own toppings on. We’ve done individual homemade pizzas as a family tradition on Christmas Eve for 17 years.

  6. Wow, what a great tradition you have going with your family! I love cutting out individual size pizzas for the kiddos to make their own!

  7. How about calzone’s! Add toppings, fold over, pinch sides, slit center and bake!

  8. For a fun twist - let the kids make dessert calzones. Any type of fruit pie filling will work - homemade is best, but canned is also okay. Sprinkle the crust with a little cinnamon/sugar before baking. Good hot or cold. I like to use granny smith apples, some butter, cinnamon/flour/sugar mix and that’s it. Very easy.
