Gwen’s Garden Update #1

My cabbage and cauliflower sprouted indoors and have grown about an inch! Sure didn’t take long! I’ll keep them indoor exposed to the sun and a little water for about four weeks until I can plant them outside! On nice days, I will slowly start to introduce the plants to the outside by setting them out for about 15-30 minute increments.

My husband and I began to build our raised gardens this week. We decided to use 4×4x8 cedar. We did some research and tried to avoid using any type of wood that had been treated for a completely organic vegetable garden. When building them, we used two 8′ pieces down the sides and cut another into 2- 4′ pieces for the other sides, giving us a 4×8 box. We staggered the corners so each layer would overlap differently giving more support. We predrilled half way down through the wood and then counter sank a screw to hold the two together. I think we may add a third, possibly a fourth layer, depending on how it looks when we get them into place.

Before filling with our soil, we are going to line the bottom of the planters with a weed barrier; black tarp-like rolls you can get at your local home store.

This is where we are today, we are researching what kind of soil mixture we are going to use now. We are looking at a mixture that will never need to be chemically fertilized and keeps good moisture. I’ll fill you in more next week. Until then, I will get my Broccoli seeds as we will be planting them indoors next week!

If you are following along in a different region-here is a recap per week that we have been doing/will be doing as far as plantings for the first 6 weeks. Start this process about 10 weeks before your last spring freeze.

Week 1: Plant Cabbage and Cauliflower indoor.
Week 3: Plant Broccoli indoor.
Week 4: Plant Onions outdoors.
Week 5: Plant Lettuce indoors. Plant Peas and Spinach outdoors.
Week 6: Plant Cabbage, Cauliflower, and Radishes outdoors.
