Need to Know… When setting the table or sitting down to dinner, you should know that knives and spoons are placed on the right, forks and napkins on the left. Although dining circumstances vary, remember the basics! Cutlery is used from the outside in.
On the right: (outside in) 1- Cocktail fork 2- Soup spoon 3- Salad knife 4- Dinner knife
On the left: (outside in) 1- Salad fork 2- Dinner fork
Above Plate 1- Dessert spoon 2- Dessert fork
Liquids on the right: Water goblets, Champagne flutes, Wine glasses and Sherry glasses are placed in the top right corner of place setting.
Solids on the left: Bread/butter plate, butter spreader, and salt and pepper shakers are placed in the top left corner of the place setting.
When in doubt follow the lead of the host or the classiest person at the table.
