Gardening Tips

Tips I learned from Lifelong Gardener, Larry Stebbins, at our local Garden Club meeting this past month.

  • When planting indoor from seeds ‘harden’ your plants each day by setting them outside in the sun for one hour.
  • The largest garlic ‘Kettle River’
  • Dry veggies, meaning not enough water, will result in bitter veggies.
  • Lack of water to radishes makes them hotter in taste!
  • Plant garlic in fall (October), mulch and water over winter.
  • In fall, add compost and mulch with a hay overlay.
  • Avoid putting tree products in compost.
  • Try to rotate veggies each season to avoid diseases. Especially peppers, tomatoes and egg plant.
  • When watering tomatoes, NEVER get water on their leaves! And tomatoes take less water than most of your other veggies.
  • Broccoli and Lettuce take the most water.
  • 9am is the best time to water.
  • Best carrot is the early carrot- 60 days to harvest!
  • Buy corn seeds that are sugar enhanced.

  1. Gwen, what is the deal with not getting water on the tomato leaves? I’ve never heard that and it’s very interesting.
