I consider my family a “healthy” family. We exercise, hardly ever get sick, and eat well-balanced meals (or at least I prepare well-balanced meals – trying to get the little people to eat them is a nightly challenge, which is why our Finicky Files articles are some of my favorites to read and share). But upon closer examination, do we really eat healthy?
This is the time of year that advertisers take advantage of our “New Year’s Resolutions” to bombard us with dieting tactics, exercise regiments, healthy eating tips and tricks, etc. Why not make a healthier lifestyle just that…a lifestyle? Excuses. And I have plenty of them: too expensive to buy organic, too time-consuming to meal plan, too much change….there, I said it. CHANGE! That’s really the big one, isn’t it? We get stuck in our ruts of buying the same things, preparing the same things, convenient snacking foods and the list is endless.
For many reasons, I’d like to make some changes this year. First, I’m getting older and my metabolism is not what it used to be. Therefore, I can’t get away with eating what I used to eat — and I LOVE snacks. Second, and not so selfish of a reason, I think about what my kids will learn from me. I want to give them a great foundation to make healthy and smart choices. We constantly have discussions with them about healthy foods and choosing healthy snacks. Then I look at some of the choices I’m giving them (like the dreaded fruit snacks) and many are processed or contain such crazy ingredients that I can’t even pronounce them. So, it’s time to get back to the basics. I want to arm our snack arsenal with healthy and YUMMY choices and I need your help! ~ Jordan
