Cycladic Beef with Potatoes
Introduction
Cycladic Beef with Potatoes, also known as Κυκλαδίτικο πατατάτο, is a traditional Greek dish originating from the Cyclades islands. This hearty recipe features tender beef, flavorful potatoes, and a rich tomato sauce, all slow-cooked to perfection.
Ingredients
- 1.200 gr beef (cut into portions, alternatively lamb or goat)
- 5 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 red onion (finely chopped)
- 2 cloves garlic (smashed)
- 6 medium-sized potatoes (peeled and quartered)
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 cup white wine (dry)
- 4-5 allspice berries
- 1 bay leaf
- 1 small cinnamon stick (optional)
- Salt
- Pepper (freshly ground)
Instructions
- Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Brown the beef on all sides to create a nice crust, about 6-7 minutes.
- Add the chopped onion and smashed garlic. Let them soften and become translucent, stirring occasionally, for 3-4 minutes.
- Add the potatoes and stir well to coat them with oil.
- Add the tomato paste and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly, until it releases its concentrated flavor.
- Deglaze the pot with white wine and let it simmer for a few minutes to evaporate the alcohol.
- Add enough hot water to partially cover the ingredients.
- Add the allspice berries, bay leaf, and cinnamon stick (if using).
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for about 1 hour and 20 minutes, or until the beef and potatoes are tender and the sauce has thickened.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Serving Ideas
- Serve hot, garnished with fresh parsley or dill.
- Accompany with a side of steamed vegetables or a simple green salad.
- Offer a dollop of yogurt or a sprinkle of crumbled feta cheese on top.
Side Dishes Ideas
- Roasted vegetables (e.g., carrots, Brussels sprouts, broccoli)
- Grilled or sautéed leafy greens (e.g., spinach, kale, collard greens)
- Creamy mashed potatoes or garlic mashed potatoes
- Warm pita bread or crusty bread for dipping in the sauce
