Introduction

Λεχματζούν is a traditional Greek dish that can be served as a snack or appetizer. It consists of small pies filled with a mixture of minced meat, onions, tomatoes, and spices, topped with melted butter.

Ingredients

  • 8 small bread rolls or 8 medium-sized pita breads or 1 package of individual pita breads
  • 350g minced lamb or mixed lamb and beef
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, peeled, seeded, and finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced (optional)
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • Lemon wedges for serving

Instructions

  1. Place the minced meat on a cutting board and add the chopped onion, tomato, garlic, parsley, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper.
  2. Using a knife, chop the ingredients together until they are well combined and the mixture has changed color.
  3. It’s ideal to refrigerate the mixture for a while to allow the flavors to meld.
  4. Preheat the oven to 200-220°C.
  5. Place a small amount of the meat mixture on each pita bread, leaving a small border around the edges.
  6. Bake the λεχματζούν in the preheated oven for about 15 minutes, or until the pita bread is golden brown.
  7. Remove the λεχματζούν from the oven and brush with melted butter.
  8. Serve hot, with a squeeze of lemon juice if desired.
